Singapore, the Strait of Malacca, Pirates & Olympics

We stopped yesterday off the coast of Singapore for refueling by two fuel tankers that stationed themselves on either side of our ship. We all wished we could have docked at Singapore and taken a walk around, but instead we paused all day off-shore for the refueling process before heading up the Strait of Malacca on our way to India.

Evidently the entire Strait of Malacca is on high alert for pirates! The crew has water hoses at the ready to spray off any pirate who tries to climb on the ship. (really.) We are not worried, though: our ship, the MV Explorer, is the fastest cruise ship in the world and the crew tells us we can outrun any pirate ship.

The kids activities are going full force: some medical students are on the ship for a month and a couple of them did a food pyramid presentation with the kids. PE is everyday from 3:30-4:30--the college students do a great job leading all sorts of gym activities. Dodgeball is the favorite. And now that the weather is hot, the kids have been swimming each day as well.

Tomorrow we have the day off from school so that everyone can participate in the Sea Olympics. Each area of the ship is a different "sea" and the seas compete against one another in a variety of games held throughout the day. Our team consists of faculty, staff, children, and lifelong learners. The theme of the Spring 2010 voyage is Sustainability, so one of the competitions is to dress up a team member in recycled clothing. Charis made the purse above out of old boxes, bags and paper as part of our team's recycled outfit. The second photo shows students preparing their sea's poster for competition.
